How to read these

What you're looking at

Every pair below is one fixture, photographed from the same spot before and after we refinished it. Nothing was replaced. The before shots are honest: rust at the drain, a chip at the rim, chalky faded gelcoat, almond and pink tile that dates a room. The after shots are the same fixture once it has been etched or scuff-sanded, primed, sprayed with several thin coats of acrylic-urethane and re-caulked. Drag the handle and you can judge the result yourself.

These come from across Redwood City — pre-war bungalows in Mount Carmel and Centennial, 1980s condos near Redwood Shores and Woodside Plaza, and upscale remodels up in Emerald Hills and Farm Hill. The fixture changes; the system that brings it back does not.

Behind the after

What separates a good after from a bad one

A clean before-and-after isn't paint over a problem. The reason these afters hold up is the prep underneath them. Porcelain and enamel tubs get an acid/silane etch that micro-roughens the glaze so the primer can grip; fiberglass and acrylic get scuff-sanded because they can't be acid-etched. Skip that step and the finish delaminates — it lifts and peels within a year. That's the single most common failure we get called to strip and redo after a hardware-store kit.

Repairs matter just as much as the coat. A chip at a tub rim or a rust spot at the drain is filled, leveled and sanded flush before any color goes on, so it reads smooth in the after rather than as a patch you can feel. The gloss itself comes from spraying several thin acrylic-urethane coats in a controlled, dust-minimized pattern instead of one heavy pass, which is what causes orange-peel texture. Done right, the surface is ready for normal use 24–48 hours later and looks factory-smooth.

I didn't believe the before-and-after photos until ours matched them. The rust-stained cast-iron tub in our Mount Carmel house looks brand new.

The fiberglass shower in our Redwood Shores condo was chalky and crazed. After refinishing it has a gloss it hasn't had in twenty years.

— Marcus T., Redwood Shores

The almond tile dated our whole Emerald Hills bathroom. Reglazed white in a day — the after looks like a new install without the demolition.

Good questions

Before & after FAQ

Are these real Redwood City before and after photos?

Yes. Each pair is the same fixture shot from the same camera angle before and after refinishing — no swapped tubs and no replacement. The slider wipes between the two so you can see the actual result.

Does reglazing really look like a new fixture?

On a sound fixture, yes. The sprayed acrylic-urethane topcoat lays down a factory-smooth, glossy surface that hides staining, dull glaze and old color. Rust spots and chips are repaired and sanded flush before the finish goes on, so they disappear in the after.

Can the gloss in the after photos really last?

A professionally reglazed surface holds its gloss for 10 to 15 years with non-abrasive cleaning. The shine comes from proper etching or scuff-sanding, a bonding primer and several thin topcoats, which is what DIY kits skip.

Will my old tile show through in the after?

No. Tile is reglazed in place with a bond coat and topcoat, so dated pink, almond or avocado tile comes back an even bright white or neutral with no grout removed and no tear-out.
